THE CITY OF NEW YORK RECEIVES DANISH CYCLING AWARD
Today, the Cycling Embassy of Denmark awarded Mayor Michael Bloomberg's efforts to get New Yorkers on the bikes
"We are actually just copying Copenhagen, so we're the ones that should be giving the Danes an award and not the other way around," said Mayor Bloomberg with a smile, when he received the award from the Cycling Embassy of Denmark during COP15 in Copenhagen.
Mayor Bloomberg receives the award for creating 217.479 miles of biking paths in New York within the last few years. The effect is significant: In the past year alone, the number of biking New Yorkers has gone up by 26 percent. The New York biking paths have been created in cooperation with the Danish architectural firm Gehl Architects.
The Cycling Embassy of Denmark believes that New York can set the example for other great cities around the world.
"Many are ready to follow the Danish example, where a large precentage of cyclists creates a green city with room for a vibrant and attractive environment," said Lise Bjørg Pedersen from the Cycling Embassy.
